You don't have to worry about your carbon filter expiring. As in most cases, cooler temperatures will slow it's aging, but you can stock up on filters for a few years if you want.

The main thing to remember is that once it becomes wet it should be changed according to the manufacturer's guidelines. If it isn't, it becomes vulnerable to bacteria forming on it.
